Aside from hiring qualified movers, the first step to creating a successful move is proper packing. Help your movers help you by properly packing all of your precious belongings. Proper packing helps minimize the risk of damages, and makes the loading/unloading process much easier. Prior to getting started, you should make sure you have all of the supplies you’ll need. This will prevent multiple trips back and forth to the store.
Boxes
What would a move be without boxes? Boxes may very well be the most important thing you are going to need when it comes to packing. When used properly, boxes provide great protection for your belongings. Boxes are also very easy to stack on top of each other, which comes in handy in terms of maximizing space. Packing paper, newspaper, bubblewrap, and foam filler are all items that can be used to eliminate open space when packing your items into boxes. Eliminating open space inside of your packed boxes prevents your items from shifting during transit, which also helps minimize the risk of damages.
A few packing Materials You May Already Have
- Towels, covers, blankets, and linens – These items that you may have already have around your house can be used to wrap fragile and breakable items.
- Bags – Any type of bags you have around the house can be quite helpful. Garbage bags can be used for clothing, and other soft material items such as pillows, stuffed animals, or blankets. Small zip lock bags come in handy for cables, cords, and any hardware you need to keep track of. Gym bags, recyclable shopping bags, and backpacks are great for other miscellaneous items.
Moving Supplies to Buy
- Either stickers, or a good old fashioned sharpie will allow you to easily label boxes according to the rooms. Labeling your boxes will make it easy for your movers to know exactly which room the boxes they are carrying go to. Placing boxes in their proper location will save precious time.
- You will also need packing tape, and potentially shrink wrap. It is important that boxes are closed tightly, and shrink wrap works great for protecting furniture items.
